“The Impossibility of a Planet” is a film by the artists and researchers Jamie Allen and Jeremy Bolen that I had the pleasure of working with the art direction and motion graphics.
The film is about the changes to planetary knowledge practices which take place when conditions abruptly shift on planet earth. It features interviews with researchers from the Anthropocene Working Group, the RAND Corporation, and others whose research defaults to earth-magnitude, as well as excerpts from E. M. Forster's 1909 proto-scifi story “The Machine Stops.”
The film was screened in October 2022 at HKW in Berlin as part of the Collaborative Practice on a Changing Planet public events . A set of six video vignettes conjoin to form a contiguous film, to be screened online and in an offline exhibition installation.
